Persistent ductus venosus

The MRI shows a persistent ductus venosus (arrow) that connects the left portal vein with the middle hepatic vein. There is also stenosis of the intrahepatic IVC with intrahepatic adjacent venous collaterals.
The coronal images offer better visualization of the intrahepatic IVC stenosis.
Case Discussion
Abnormal vascular connections are occasionally seen at ultrasonography and require further evaluation. Park et al have categorized intrahepatic portosystemic shunts into four morphologic types. A persistent ductus venosus could be considered as a fifth type of portosystemic shunt.
