Cough, fever and respiratory distress of 1 week duration.

Confluent consolidation in the left lower lobe with cavitation..

Confluent airspace consolidation in the left lower lobe with air-bronchograms and multiple sharply defined cavities that contain air and minimal fluid, consistent with cavitating pneumonia.

Small left pleural effusion.

Features are consistent with cavitating pneumonia. Cavitation should be differentiated from abscess and pneumatocele (thin-walled pseudocyst) formation, both of which can complicate pneumonia..
