Uterus in neonatal inguinal hernia

Presentation

Features of a right inguinal hernia present since birth, but more pronounced recently. Right groin mass extending to the labia.

Patient Data

Age: 4 weeks
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Moderate right inguinal hernia. The hernia contains both ovaries and the uterus is seen across the neck of the hernia.

Following reduction of hernia

Following manual closed reduction, the hernial sac is empty.

Case Discussion

Neonatal hernias are not uncommon. Finding bowel or ovaries within the hernia is expected. Finding a uterus is not!
