Case contributed by Jayanth Keshavamurthy
Diagnosis certain

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Female

What hardware is seen here?

x-ray

A fetal monitoring equipment usually attached to the fetal scalp, is observed.

Case Discussion

This image was acquired after the fetus was delivered via Cesarean section.

Another radiograph obtained subsequently confirmed that the monitoring device was not left behind.

Given the radiation effects on embryonic and fetal development, pregnant patients are seldom imaged using ionizing radiation. It is hence rare to obtain an abdominal radiograph with the monitoring equipment present, to prevent irradiating the fetus.
