Pre and infrapatellar bursitis

Presentation

Anterior knee swelling - 2 wks. No trauma.

Patient Data

Age: 35 yrs
Gender: Female
ultrasound

There is prepatellar thin walled collection with internal septa and fluid-fluid levels.  It measures about 40 x 35 x 15 mm.  There is no vascularity in wall / septa.

There is subcutaneous anechoic fluid  collection ( 27 x 15 x 6 mm ) anterior to tibial tuberosity and distal patellar tendon.

There is normal amount of fluid in deep infra-patellar bursa region.

There is no suprapatellar joint effusion.

Quadriceps tendon       -  Intact with normal echopatten      

Patellar tendon            - Intact with normal echopatten      

Hoffa’s fat pad             – Homogeneous echopattern. No mass lesion.

Case Discussion

Findings favor pre patellar and superficial infrapatellar bursitis.
