Presentation

Left neck pain, ongoing for a few weeks. Pain on swallowing.

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female

Large left temporomandibular joint effusion, with thick enhancing synovium. Internally there is heterogeneous T2/STIR signal. Mild flattening and irregularity of the mandibular condyle. 

Case Discussion

This patient has a known history of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), with typical imaging features. There is a wide range of reported prevalence of RA affecting the temporomandibular joint, ranging between 5-92%.
