Mucoepidermoid carcinoma - parotid

Selected CT images demonstrate an ill-defined right parotid mass,  with a cystic component. 

Case Discussion

The patient went on to have a resection. 

Histology

Right parotid gland, resection: mucoepidermoid carcinoma - grade 2 (intermediate).

The tumor is graded according to the scheme of Brandwein et al modified from the AFIP grading scheme for mucoepidermoid carcinomas (Brandwein M, et al. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma. A clinicopathologic study of 80 patients with special reference to histological grading. Am J Surg Pathol 2001; 25:835-845). In this scheme, the tumor scores 2 for its growth pattern. this equates to intermediate grade.
