Presentation
Child with seizures. Confirmed history of gestational CMV infection.
Patient Data
MRI imaging showing bilateral parietooccipital gyri architectural distortion characterized by microgyria, focal volume loss, and high T2/FLAIR signal in the white matter. The posterior horns of the lateral ventricles are prominent in an ex-vacuo component. Corpus callosum is formed, however, there is a thinning of the splenium.
Case Discussion
Although those MRI findings are non-specific, in the context of a confirmed congenital cytomegalovirus infection, they are consistent with CNS sequelae of congenital infection.
CMV is the most common cause of intra-uterine infection and most common cause of congenital infective and brain damage.
