Name some of the "can't miss" findings on abdominal radiographs in kids.
Free intraperitoneal gas (a.k.a. "free gas"), pneumatosis intestinalis (gas in the wall of the bowel), portovenous gas (gas in the portal venous system). While not always catastrophic, any of these findings require a discussion between the radiologist and the referring clinicians as they may indicate a surgical emergency. Always look for gas where it shouldn't be!
Do you see any of these?
No. This study does not demonstrate any of these potentially catastrophic findings.
Marked gaseous distention of stomach with the so-called "caterpillar sign." This occurs from gastric contractions against a hypertrophied, obstructing pylorus. Stool and gas identified in non-dilated small bowel and colon.
