Presentation
Dyspnea, fever and chest pain since 1 week. X ray shows a peripheral right lower zone nodule.
Patient Data
Thrombosis of the right posterior and lateral basal segmental branches of right pulmonary artery and posterior basal segmental branch of left pulmonary artery. Wedge shaped pleura based soft tissue attenuation lesion in the right lateral basal and medial segment of the right middle lobe and left posterior basal segment most likely suggestive of pulmonary infarcts (represented by Hampton's hump on plain film).
Case Discussion
Peripheral wedge shaped soft tissue attenuation lesion represent pulmonary infarct, is a significant finding associated with acute pulmonary thromboembolism. Visualization of such a lesion on plain film in a patient with clinical features of pulmonary embolism may necessitate pulmonary angiography, however this finding is not very specific.
