Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Case contributed by Frank Gaillard
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Adult patient with weakness.

Patient Data

Age: Adult
mri

MRI demonstrates prominent T2 signal in the corticospinal tracts as well as somewhat reduced signal intensity in the precentral gyrus.

Case Discussion

These features, although subtle were thought to be consistent with and support the clinical and EMG diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

It is important to note that both these features are seen faintly in many normal subjects and thus an appreciation for what is 'normal' is essential.
