Patient Data
Bilaterally lesions are observed in centrum semiovale. These lesions are hyperintense in FLAIR sequence and in T2WI , in relation to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
Incidentally, small symmetric structures are observed in basal ganglia and internal capsule which are hyperintense in T2WI and hypointense in T1WI, SPIR and FLAIR sequence, in relation to prominent Virchow-Robin spaces, giving a cribrosum appearance ("status cribosum" or "état criblé").
Case Discussion
État criblé, also known as status cribrosum, is a term that describes the diffusely widened perivascular spaces (Virchow-Robin spaces) in the basal ganglia, especially in the corpus striatum. It is usually symmetrical, with the perivascular spaces showing CSF signal and without diffusion restriction.
It should be differentiated from état lacunaire, which is related to multiple lacunar infarcts.
