Presentation

Pain in the left forefoot worsened by weight bearing, that began immediately after a day of intensive basketball playing. No specific injury mechanism reported.

X-rays obtained upon the 1st presentation

No fracture line was discernible in the initial x-rays. Nevertheless, considering the high clinical probability of metatarsal stress fracture a therapy with lightweight cast was initiated. 

Control x-rays one month later

A healing stress fracture is visible through the lateral cortex of the second metatarsal with marked periosteal bone formation.
