Focal nodular hyperplasia

Case contributed by Bruno Di Muzio
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Incidental finding on ultrasound.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Female

Liver US

ultrasound

There is an ill-defined hypoechogenic mass lesion in the liver segment VIII that shows some internal vascularity, perhaps with a central feeding vessel. The remainder of the liver was unremarkable, with no other focal lesions or cirrhosis (not shown).

CT Abdomen (selected images)

ct

CT confirms a hypervascular lobulated mass in the segments IVA/VIII that becomes homogeneous to the liver parenchyma on the portal venous phase. The remainder of the liver and abdomen was normal (not shown).

MRI Liver (Primovist)

mri

The lesion is shown to be isointense to the background liver on T2, slightly hypointense on T1, and having prominent hepatobiliary contrast uptake. Also, no diffusion restriction and no drop of the signal on IP-OOP sequences.

Case Discussion

The MRI imaging features are those of a focal nodular hyperplasia
