5th carpometacarpal joint dislocation

Presentation

Swollen hand at 2am in the morning.

Patient Data

Age: 25
Gender: Male

Right 5th carpometacarpal joint dislocation. There is a minimally displaced oblique fracture through the base of the third metacarpal. No further fractures or dislocations are identified.

X-ray

Post-reduction and casting

Right 5th carpometacarpal joint has been reduced and alignment is anatomical. Fracture at the base of the third metacarpal is unchanged in alignment.

This case also demonstrates a base of 3rd metacarpal fracture, which is a commonly associated injury.
