Presentation

Known neurofibromatosis type 1 presenting with long term back and lower limb pain.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Male

Multiple sizable plexiform neurofibromas involving the lumbar and sacral spinal nerve roots as well as the cauda equina expanding the neural foramina and extending into paravertebral regions. 

Case Discussion

The extensive distribution of the plexiform neurofibromas produces an MRI appearance, said to resemble a Christmas tree.
