What are the two most frequent complications?
Diverticulitis and lower gastrointestinal haemorrhage.
Are they true or false diverticula? What is the difference between the two?
Colonic diverticula are almost all false diverticula: mucosa herniating through a defect in the muscularis and covered by overlying serosa. True diverticula contain all three layers of the bowel wall.
Double contrast barium enema demonstrates very widespread diverticula, most numerous in the sigmoid colon. There are no regions of stenosis and no evidence of fistula formation.
