There is a focal spur-like bony protrusion in the posterior occipital protuberance extending in the craniocaudal direction.

An occipital spur, also known as an occipital knob, occipital bun, chignon, or inion hook, is an exaggerated external occipital protuberance. Three types of external occipital protuberance have been described:
- type I: smooth type
- type II: crest type
- type III: spine type
