Alveolar soft part sarcoma

Case contributed by Yasser Asiri
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Mass in the anterior aspect of the left thigh.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
mri

Large lobulated soft tissue mass in the extensor compartment of the thigh demonstrates high signal intensity on fluid sensitive fat-suppressed sequences and intermediate signal intensity on T1 with avid contrast enhancement in the gadolinium enhanced images. Multiple prominent surrounding vessels. The location of the mass and the surrounding prominent vascular structures are highly suggestive of alveolar soft part sarcoma.

Case Discussion

This case demonstrates the MRI characteristics of alveolar soft part sarcoma which include a highly vascular mass in the anterior thigh compartment and the surrounding tortuous vascular structures. The mass may demonstrates intermediate signal intensity on T1 due to internal slow flowing blood. Biopsy was taken from the mass and the histopathology results confirmed the diagnosis.
