Presentation

Swelling of the right thigh.

Patient Data

Age: 17 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Sheath-like calcifications extending along the posterior aspect of right thigh down to popliteal fossa. Considering the patient's age and the specific radiographic appearance, the findings are in keeping with juvenile dermatomyositis.

Case Discussion

This case shows the typical calcifications usually seen in juvenile dermatomyositis. Patients with juvenile dermatomyositis are at risk of developing calcinotic lesions that may hinder the muscle function, and can be treated by US guided irrigation and steroid injection.
