Knee rice bodies

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Patient with history of rheumatoid arthritis. He complains of chronic pain and swelling of the right knee.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male
mri

Severe joint effusion is seen with synovial thickening, mainly in the supra-patellar recess where thickened plica could be seen.

Multiple loose bodies and multiple tiny loose signals are seen distributing within the effusion-fluid, consistent with rice bodies. 

Case Discussion

Rice bodies may be seen in arthritis (as rheumatoid arthritis), chronic synovitis and chronic bursitis.
