Anterior talofibular ligament injury

Presentation

History of the right ankle twist a few months back. Complaining of persistent pain on the lateral aspect of the ankle.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female
ultrasound

Right anterior talofibular ligament shows sagging, thinning, hypoechoic echopattern with loss of continuity near fibular attachment. Right anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament and calcaneofibular ligaments show normal echopattern. There is no effusion in the anterior recess of the ankle joint.

Asymptomatic left anterior talofibular ligament shows normal fibrillary echopattern.

Case Discussion

A female presented with lateral ankle pain persisting for a few months after ankle twist. Ultrasound shows anterior talofibular ligament complete tear ( grade III injury ). MRI was done later; showed similar findings ( not uploaded ).

The Broström-Gould procedure was performed by treating orthopedic surgeon.
