What is the meaning of "contained" in the context of a herniated disc?
A herniated disc can be also referred to as contained if the displaced part of the disc is covered by the posterior longitudinal ligament or the annulus fibres. If there is a displacement of disc material beyond, this is called "uncontained" disc herniation.
Key findings:
uncontained disc material in the left L2/3 foraminal zone (red arrowhead)
posterior displacement of the left L2 nerve root (blue arrow), which looks altered and deformed if compared to the other nerve roots
