Post operative fat necrosis from laproscopic ports can mimic metastasis
Presentation
Left nephrectomy performed laparoscopically due to clear cell carcinoma 6 months prior to the first PET-CT.
Patient Data
There are 2 FDG metabolically avid lesions in the left renal bed with no obvious CT correlate.
Keep in mind the laparoscopic ports can cause fat necrosis and be FDG avid before calling it a metastasis.
So a repeat PET was done 4 months later with no chemotherapy and there was resolution of the original finding confirming the initial suspicion of fat necrosis from laparoscopic ports.
4 mth after the 1st PET-CT
So a repeat PET was done 4 months later with resolution of the original finding confirming the initial suspicion of fat necrosis from laparoscopic ports..
Case Discussion
Always know the operative procedure and how many ports were used and locations when reading post operative cases. It saved unnecessary testing like biopsies, etc.
