Presentation

Intermittent right flank pain.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

4mm right sided radiopaque calculus in the line of the right ureter projected over the L3 transverse process.

Case Discussion

Calcium oxalate stones are the commonest cause of renal calculi. These are radio-opaque.

Ureteric stones less than 5mm are typically treated conservatively.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy can be used for large stones causing symptoms.
