Presentation
Came off a motorbike at high speed
Patient Data
There is an undisplaced, vertically oriented fracture through the posterior lip of the distal left tibia ("posterior malleolus"), extending into the tibiotalar articulation.
A subtle avulsion fracture of the lateral process of the talus is additionally noted at the insertion site of the anterior tibiofibular ligament.
Case Discussion
Fractures of the 'posterior malleolus', or the posterior lip of the distal tibia, are also known as paratrooper fractures. They were associated with injuries sustained by military parachutists during World War II due to improper landing techniques.
