Ultrasound examination was performed over the visible and palpable lump at the medial side of the left forefoot. The patient experienced pain and discomfort on probe pressure.
Deep within the soft tissues is a mainly hypoechoic heterogeneous 4.5cm mass containing mixed echoes. The mass appears to involve the medial and plantar aspects of the first metatarsal. At the plantar aspect, the lesion lies deep to the flexor hallucis longus tendon and is clearly separate from it. Disruption of the periosteum and a strong suspicion that the lesion arises from the first metatarsal.
