Acral lentiginous melanoma is melanoma of the hands and feet. 'Acral' derives from the Greek word 'acros', meaning highest point or extremity. 'Lentiginous' means that the lesion initially appears as a brown macula resembling lentigo, a benign cutaneous lesion composed of melanocytes.
