Semimembranosus injury - distal (knee MRI)

Presentation

Twisting injury.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male

Small knee joint effusion. No acute meniscal or ligamentous injury. No cartilage lesion. 

Peripheral myofascial/muscle belly edema of the distal semimembranosus with extension into the free tendon. Posteromedial corner structures are otherwise uninjured.

Case Discussion

Always keep an eye on the extra-articular structures as a cause for knee pain, especially as these tend to be incompletely imaged when the field of view is centered on the knee.
