Twenty-four radio-opaque markers are swallowed, and abdominal x-rays are taken 1 hour, 24 hours, 48 hours, and 72 hours later. None of the markers are seen after 72 hours, indicating no slow transit constipation.
Case Discussion
There are numerous variations in how a colonic transit study is conducted and how the findings are interpreted. Twenty-four markers are ingested in this case, and abdominal x-rays are taken 1, 24, 48, and 72 hours later.
If 24 rings are used, then <5 rings should be present in five days.
