Presentation
Twisting injury during sporting activity (football). Presents with focal tenderness left anterior superior iliac spine on clinical examination.
Patient Data
Features consistent with an acute left-sided anterior superior iliac spine avulsion injury.
Sartorius and less likely tensor fascia lata avulsion is suspected.
There is age-appropriate skeletal immaturity.
Case Discussion
Avulsion injury of the anterior superior iliac spine is a fairly common young athlete avulsion injury.
It usually occurs due to forceful extension of the affected hip during a sporting activity that incorporates running, sprinting, and jumping.
The highest risk sports include athletics, football, and Ice Hockey.
They are usually treated conservatively with analgesia and restriction of movement.
Occasionally surgery is required.
