Urinary retention due to gravid retroverted uterus

Presentation

Patient complain of urine retention and one week of pelvic pain. Gestational age about 8 weeks.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Female

The urinary bladder appears compressed anteriorly by gravid uterus.
The gravid uterus appears retroverted causing mass effect upon the lower aspect of the urinary bladder.
Single alive fetus in utero is seen.
Both kidneys appear normal in cortical echogenicity and size with no hydronephrosis.

Case Discussion

This is unique and rare case of acute urine retention caused by retroverted gravid uterus, reported cases are generally in late first or early second trimesters. The patient underwent catheterization placement and close monitoring with no complication.
