Ovarian dermoid cyst

Case contributed by Mohammad Taghi Niknejad
Diagnosis certain

Presentation

Pelvic pain and palpable mass on physical exam.

Patient Data

Age: 12 years
Gender: Female
ct

A 95×65×70 mm thick walled cystic lesion with areas of fat density and calcification is present at the pelvis, which seems to originate from the left adnexa and is most consistent with dermoid cyst.

In addition, a small amount of free fluid is present in the pelvis.

Case Discussion

CT has high sensitivity in the diagnosis of the ovarian dermoid cyst and typically demonstrates fat, fat-fluid level, calcification (sometimes dentiform), Rokitansky protuberance, and tufts of hair. The presence of most of the above tissues is diagnostic of ovarian cystic teratomas in 98% of cases.
