Lateral orbital wall blow-in fracture and concomitant orbital floor and maxillary sinus wall fracture
Presentation
Facial trauma and asymmetry and deformity of right side of the face.
Patient Data
Remarkably displaced comminuted fractures in the right orbit lateral wall and maxillary sinus walls and minimally displaced fracture in the right orbit floor and hemorrhage within the right maxillary sinus antrum are seen. Note the overriding fractured bones of the lateral orbital wall that has led to shortening of the wall and also the impression of displaced bones on the right lateral rectus muscle musculotendinous junction.
Case Discussion
The lateral orbital wall fracture is usually comminuted and associated with maxillary sinus wall fracture which leads to deformity of the face in turn. The shortening of the lateral orbital wall and inwardly displaced fractured bone can lead to dysfunctional eyelids and lateral rectus muscle dysfunction respectively, that must be managed carefully.
