Abdominal foreign body - screw

Case contributed by Dr Mostafa El-Feky

The child claimed to have ingested a foreign body while playing.

Patient Data

Age: 5 years
Gender: Male

A radio-opaque foreign body is seen in the left lumbar region posteriorly. It has metallic density with a rounded head and blunt end, mostly a screw in small bowel.

Case Discussion

Fortunately, the ingested screw has blunt edges, so perforation is less likely. Foreign body ingestion is common in children and 90% of them pass spontaneously without complications 1.
