Abscess in foot

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Pain in sole of forefoot over 4th MTP joint. No trauma. Referred for radiograph and ultrasound (to look for collection).

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

No bony abnormality.

 An irregular hypoechoic area is noted in subcutaneous plane (approximate size - 15 x 10 x 10 mm). It overlies the 3rd - 4th metatarsal head region. On compression, echoes show movement.  Increased perilesional vascularity is noted without vascularity in the hypoechoic area. There is no joint effusion or tenosynovitis.      

Case Discussion

The ultrasound findings are compatible with abscess formation in the subcutaneous plane of the foot. Upon exploration, purulent fluid was seen.
