Presentation

2nd pregnancy. 14 weeks of gestation. Patient referred for 11 to 14 weeks detailed ultrasound examination.

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female

Antenatal ultrasound

  • Crown rump length (CRL): 66.7 mm corresponding to 13 weeks 0 days fetus
  • Nuchal translucency (NT): 1.7 mm
  • Fetal heart rate (FHR): 171 bpm

Typical ductus venosus spectrum is seen while umbilical vein is seen connecting vena cava inferiorly. Tricuspid valve spectrum is normal

Case Discussion

The umbilical vein bypasses the portal sinus and the liver and is connected to the systemic venous circulation via an abnormal venous channel extending from the umbilical vein to the midportion of the inferior vena cava.
