Accessory breast tissue

Case contributed by Mellanie Deborah

Patient shows up for routine screening mammogram. Second mammogram in 20+ years.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

Heterogeneously dense breast parenchyma. No nodules nor suspicious microcalcification are visible.

MLO views don't show any abnormal axillary lymph nodes. RMLO view demonstrates the presence of fibroglandular tissue in the lower region of the right axilla.

Case Discussion

Since this patient's breast tissue is moderately dense, the sensitivity of mammography is reduced, and there may be nodules obscured by the parenchymal tissue. In these cases, it is highly recommended to refer the patient to screening breast ultrasonography.
