Accessory hemiazygos vein variant

Presentation

Healthy newborn with an Incidental finding of abnormal venous structure in the echocardiography, check-up.

Patient Data

Age: 1 month
Gender: Female

The hemiazygos vein is seen to the left of the aorta extending beyond T8 with no midline cross or continuity with the azygos vein.  The hemiazygos vein joins the accessory (superior) hemiazygos vein forming a single trunk draining directly into the left brachiocephalic vein.

Right upper lung azygos lobe and fissure containing the azygos vein that is seen normally draining into the superior vena cava.
