Marked distension of the oesophagus with an air-fluid level evident in the superior mediastinum, most likely due to achalasia.
Case Discussion
Achalasia can be demonstrated on chest radiographs and results in chronic dilation of the oesophagus due to poor emptying. The diagnosis can be confirmed on a barium swallow which will show the classic beaklike narrowing of the distal oesophagus 1.
