Achilles tendinopathy with partial thickness insertion site tear

Case contributed by Dr Kewal Arunkumar Mistry

Presentation

Chronic heel pain with recent onset aggravation.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

Ultrasound shows thickened and hypoechoic right Achilles tendon with discontinuation of its deep fibers at its insertion site at calcaneum with adjacent fluid. Findings are suggestive of tendinopathy with partial thickness tear involving less than 50% fibres. Overlying subcutaneus tissue is also thickened.

Left Achilles tendon is normal in echotexture.
