Achilles tendon laceration

Presentation

Cut injury in the Achilles region cut wound a few hours prior to the presentation. Ultrasound was performed to check the Achilles tendon injury.

Patient Data

Age: 15 years
Gender: Female

There is full thickness and near full-width defect of Achilles tendon approximately 10 mm away from the insertion site. The gap between the two edges of the tendon is 10 mm.  Defect shows fluid and air. Rest of the tendon shows normal echopattern. There is no enthesophyte at the tendon insertion site.

Surgical repair of the tendon was done followed by immobilization for 5 weeks. The patient fell on the ground on the 1st day of partial mobilization. A repeat ultrasound was performed.

There is full thickness defect of Achilles tendon approximately 10 mm away from the insertion site. The gap between the two edges of the tendon is 15 mm. Floating sutures are present in the defect along with air and fluid. Rest of the tendon shows normal echopattern.

Case Discussion

This patient presented with an Achilles region cut injury. Ultrasound shows a defect of the Achilles tendon. The tendon was repaired followed by immobilization. The patient fell on the ground on the 1st day of partial mobilization resulting in re-injury of the Achilles tendon.
