Acoustic schwannoma - intracanalicular

Case contributed by Assoc Prof Frank Gaillard

A small soft tissue nodule, which enhances, is located in the lateral aspect of the left internal acoustic meatus.

Case Discussion

Intracanalicular acoustic schwannomas can be tricky to identify, if one does not perform high quality [i.e. high resolution thin T2 sequences (e.g. FIESTA)]. Administering contrast, something which is often not done, is helpful in identifying these small lesions, especially those within the very fundus of the IAC or even within the labyrinth (or facial nerve canal in the setting of facial schwannomas).
