Acute appendicitis

Case contributed by Dr Andrew Dixon

Right iliac fossa pain

Patient Data

Age: 35
Gender: Female

In the right iliac fossa there is a blind ending tubular structure measuring 10 mm in diameter and demonstrating peripheral hyperaemia. Stratification of the wall (target sign) and surrounding echogenic fat are signs of oedema. This structure was non-compressible, focally tender and aperistaltic. Appearance consistent with acute appendicitis.

Case Discussion

Typical ultrasound appearance of acute appendicitis. Ultrasound is a particularly useful adjunct to clinical assessment in female patients where gynaecological pathology is a differential possibility.
