In the right iliac fossa there is a blind ending tubular structure measuring 10 mm in diameter and demonstrating peripheral hyperemia. Stratification of the wall (target sign) and surrounding echogenic fat are signs of edema. This structure was non-compressible, focally tender and aperistaltic. Appearance consistent with acute appendicitis.
Typical ultrasound appearance of acute appendicitis. Ultrasound is a particularly useful adjunct to clinical assessment in female patients where gynecological pathology is a differential possibility.
