The palatine tonsils are enlarged with hyperemia of the crypts in a diffuse form. The right is more prominent. There is an irregular phlegmon extending cranially to the level of the nasopharynx on the right. These are associated with the presence of extensive edematous changes in adipose tissue adjacent to parapharyngeal and submandibular space and the presence of many reactive adenopathy in relation to both jugular chains. No abscesses or collections are identified.

Case Discussion

Findings consistent with bilateral acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis, with extensive phlegmon to the right.
