Acute middle cerebral arterial embolus

Case contributed by Dr Frank Parrish

Presentation

Right sided weakness

Patient Data

Gender: Male
Modality: CT

Acute left middle cerebral arterial embolus seen as a filling defect on arterial phase. No established infarct on non-contrast CT. Perfusion shows increased TTP without decreased CBV indicating this is ischaemic brain that is not yet infarcted.

Case Discussion

CT perfusion in ischaemic stroke has become established in most centres with stroke services as an important adjunct, along with CT angiography, to conventional imaging of the brain with a non-contrast CT scan.
