Dyspnea and chest pain.
Patient Data
Scanogram shows an ill-defined peripheral pleural-based right lower lobe pulmonary opacity.
CTPA shows large pulmonary arterial filling defects at the distal right pulmonary artery and bilateral segmental and subsegmental pulmonary artery branches, more on right side in keeping with acute pulmonary embolism.
Right lower lobe wedge-shaped peripheral consolidation surrounded by ground-glass densities, suggestive of acute pulmonary infarction.
No signs of right heart strain.
Case Discussion
The presence of peripheral consolidation in plain radiograph or scanogram in clinically suspected patients with acute pulmonary embolism refers to (Hampton hump), which is present in about 20% of cases and represents associated pulmonary infarction.
