Adenoid stones within hypertrophied adenoid tonsils

Presentation

Right middle ear effusion. CT to rule out a nasopharyngeal tumor.

Patient Data

Age: 17 years
Gender: Male

Hypertrophy of the adenoid tonsils with numerous small stones (<3 mm) within the cryptic folds. No abnormal enhancement on enhanced CT. Normal fossa of Rosenmuller.

 Opacification of the right mastoid air cells and middle ear cavities (otomastoiditis).

Mucosal thickening of the maxillary, sphenoid, and frontal sinuses with a filling of the ethmoid cells (chronic sinusitis).

Case Discussion

CT features of adenoid stones within hypertrophied adenoid tonsils.

Calcified adenoid stones are uncommon, seen as small stones within the cryptic folds, and usually considered as the result of chronic tonsillar inflammation 1.
