Presentation
Renal cysts on follow-up, recent ultrasound revealed a complex cyst.
Patient Data
multiple simple cortical and medullary cysts ranging from a few millimeters to a few centimeters are seen in both kidneys
the largest cyst in the upper pole of the right kidney has smooth, thin walls with an identifiable, mildly enhancing soft tissue component. Thin rims of wall calcification are also seen
multiple simple hepatic cysts
Case Discussion
Multiple simple renal and hepatic cysts at this age raise the possibility of hereditary transmission of cystic renal disease. Complications commonly encountered include hemorrhage, calculi formation, and eventually end-stage renal disease. Any complex cyst identified has to be evaluated for underlying malignant change. The cyst in question was recommended for further evaluation and histopathological correlation.
